Metal Corrosion

Abis’s many years experience in working with various materials, metals and alloys allowed us to compile an extended database on their corrosion behavior and elaborate suitable corrosion tests. A large number of factors affect corrosion behavior, and therefore there is no universal corrosion test.

Knowledge of the operating specifications of components is therefore key to the selection of tests to be performed. Service history of any previous components is of great use for determining likely corrosion paths.  Possible testing includes:
•    Cabinet testing – This category includes controlled humidity, corrosive gas and salt spray testing. These tests can be used to accelerate specific corrosion mechanisms in a controlled environment. 
•    Immersion tests – Immersion tests provide quick analysis of the effect of specific chemicals on components.
•    High-pressure/high-temperature tests – Specific equipment may be required to reproduce certain working environments. Structural analysis can also take place in these environments.
•    Electrochemical tests – Techniques such as electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and electrochemical noise allow accurate analysis of the extent of corrosion of a surface.

The key factor to consider is the operating environment of the components being considered, as this allows a suitable testing set to be assembled.
